Winter Storms In Grants Pass: Tips For Preventing Frozen Pipes And Water Damage

February 28, 2025

Learn how to prevent winter water damage.

Winter in Grants Pass can be a beautiful time of year, but it also comes with some risks to your home—especially when temperatures drop below freezing. One of the biggest headaches homeowners face during winter storms is frozen pipes, which can lead to serious water damage if they burst. Nobody wants to wake up to a flooded home, so let’s talk about some easy ways to prevent this winter nightmare. And keep in mind if disaster does strike, there’s no need to worry—professional water damage cleanup in Grants Pass is just a call away!

Why Do Pipes Freeze?

When the temperature drops, the water inside your pipes can freeze, expanding and putting pressure on the pipe walls. If the pressure builds up too much, the pipe can crack or burst, sending water rushing into your home. This can lead to serious damage, from soaked carpets and warped flooring to mold growth and structural issues.

How to Prevent Frozen Pipes and Water Damage

Luckily, there are simple steps you can take to protect your home from winter storms. Here’s how:

1. Insulate Your Pipes

Pipes that are exposed to the cold—like those in basements, attics, garages, and exterior walls—are the most vulnerable. Wrap them in foam pipe insulation or use heat tape to keep them warm. This small investment can save you thousands in repair costs.

2. Keep the Heat On

Even if you’re planning to be away for a few days, keep your thermostat set to at least 55°F. It might seem like a waste of energy, but a small heating bill is nothing compared to the cost of water damage cleanup after a burst pipe.

3. Let Faucets Drip

On especially cold nights, turn on your faucets to a slow drip. Running water is less likely to freeze, and the movement relieves pressure in the pipes, reducing the risk of bursting.

4. Open Cabinet Doors

If you have pipes under sinks—especially on exterior walls—leave cabinet doors open so warm air can circulate around them. This simple trick can prevent freezing in the coldest parts of your home.

5. Seal Up Drafts

Cold air sneaking in through cracks and gaps can put your pipes at risk. Check for drafts around windows, doors, and even where pipes enter your home. Use weather stripping, caulk, or insulation to keep the cold air out.

6. Know Where Your Water Shutoff Valve Is

If a pipe does burst, shutting off the water quickly can minimize damage. Take a moment to locate your home’s main water shutoff valve so you’re prepared in case of an emergency.

What to Do If Your Pipes Freeze or Burst

If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle of water comes out, your pipes might be frozen. Try warming the pipes with a hairdryer or heating pad, but never use an open flame. If the pipe has already burst, shut off your water supply immediately and call in the pros.
